Most people are aware of who lawyers are and what they do. It’s one of the vastest and most well-known professions in the world.

But lawyers aren’t the only members of a legal team. If you or somebody you know is taking legal action or dealing with a claim, it’s not just their lawyer who is involved in the case.

Legal services hired millions of people, many of whom work in law firms but may not necessarily be lawyers. A legal team comprises several qualified individuals, all of whom play essential roles in the resolution of all legal issues.

Legal departments are vital partners of any business or organization and often work long-term with business owners to ensure legal compliance. The team in a legal department can also work on individual legal cases, such as in the case of Philip Esformes.

Let’s take a closer look at all of the individuals that work as part of a legal team.

4 Members in a Legal Team

Here are four of the different roles that you can find in a legal department.

1. Lawyers

Lawyers advise their clients on legal matters and help them to file claims against another individual or an organization. They may represent their clients in court if necessary to resolve disputes and gain compensation for them.

Often, lawyers specialize in just one or two areas of the law. For example, they might focus on criminal defense or employment law, or they might become a specialist divorce lawyer. In some cases, they may need to interview witnesses or other relevant people in a case to gather evidence.

2. Paralegals

Paralegals help lawyers with research and evidence collection. They may also be involved with the drafting of contracts and the organization of legal documentation, usually through document management software.

Some paralegals may also perform other administrative tasks, such as diary management and document filing. Just like lawyers, paralegals can specialize in one or two specific areas of the law.

3. Secretaries

Legal secretaries support lawyers by managing all of their clerical work. They will answer calls from clients and arrange consultations with the lawyer as and when necessary.

A legal secretary will also type documents and file them away correctly. They will organize the lawyer’s diary and arrange transport if needed. Ultimately, they take some of the weight off a lawyer’s shoulders by taking responsibility for the administrative tasks.

4. Bookkeepers

Bookkeepers aid a legal team with their finances. They prepare and manage invoices and payments, track income and outgoings, and manage the law firm’s bank accounts. If they notice any red flags or errors in the accounts, they will quickly resolve them to avoid financial loss.

A bookkeeper is also responsible for processing checks and producing accurate financial records. They can advise the legal department on how to maximize their profits and cut costs.
