The firm was started in 1890 and had 20 offices in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. It has about 1,400 lawyers and 1,000 staff members. The firm is known for its legal work, especially in the area of appeals law.

History

In May 1890, Republican business lawyer John Bicknell and Democrat lawyer Walter Trask started the firm. Judge James Gibson joined the company in 1897. Six years later, the firm merged with the law firm of former Los Angeles city attorney William Ellsworth Dunn & assistant city attorney Albert Crutcher. The company got its name from the merger, which it still has today.

In 2007, the Montana Supreme Court said that Gibson Dunn “acted with actual malice” when he sued art expert Steve Seltzer for saying that a painting signed by Charles Marion Russell was actually made by his grandfather Olaf Carl Seltzer, which made the painting worth less. The Intercept says that Gibson Dunn has hired private detectives to find Steven Donziger and put together “a team of hundreds of lawyers to fight him.” [13] Because of this, in April 2021, a group of students called Law Students for Climate Accountability started a boycott.

The firm worked for George W. Bush in the case Bush v. Gore, which was about whether or not the results of the 2000 presidential election in Florida should be certified. Theodore Olsen, the partner who argued Bush’s case in the Supreme Court, later worked for the Bush administration as solicitor general.
