How Easy is it to Clean the Bathroom Curtain?

It is difficult to achieve the perfect cleanliness of the curtain in the bathroom because it is constantly exposed to high humidity and steam, which is fertile ground for the development of fungi and bacteria.

Constant contact with water leaves a lime deposit on the curtain, which is also difficult to clean.

What you need to know before cleaning

How care of the nylon curtains in the bathroom depends on what it is made of. The most common materials are:

  1. Polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate. Poly
  2. ester and vinyl curtains are the strongest and most durable, easy to clean and should be washed with powder and bleach.
  3. Water-repellent fabric; these curtains are very comfortable and practical. The impregnation allows you to quickly and easily wash away traces of water, leaving no residue. It is enough to wipe it with a clean cloth. These curtains can be washed once a week.
  4. Polyethylene. The cheapest and most short-lived. It must be changed once a month in the absence of proper care. Pollux, Komet or baking soda are usually used for cleaning. With proper care, they retain their quality for up to 6 months. It is better not to wash the polyethylene curtain, but to clean it.
  5. Glass. It is sufficient to use standard glass cleaner. Easily transfers any home remedies.

Before cleaning the curtain, you need to carefully study the label, which usually indicates whether the product can be washed, at what temperature to do it, whether it is allowed to use chlorine-containing products.

How to wash curtains

The most effective way to clean your curtain is to wash it. Products made of PVC and polyester are best washed.

It is recommended to extend the curtain in the machine, including the program “delicate wash” with 40 temperature of.

If it is allowed to use bleach, then the available detergent is poured into the detergent compartment, for example, Whiteness, Domestos or any other.

If the use of chlorine is prohibited, it will be correct to soak the curtain with Vanish or any other chlorine-free product before washing.

In case of heavy dirt, you can turn on the “spot” mode. Under no circumstances should the product be dried or wrung out in the machine.

For the best effect, you need to throw a couple of old towels into the car with the curtain at the same time: they will act as a brush for washing.

The following methods can be used:

  1. Pour 120 ml of vinegar, the same amount of water, 2 tbsp into the detergent compartment. l. soda, 25 drops of pine oil. Wash the curtain with a gentle wash.
  2. Use half a glass of apple cider vinegar, 60 ml of liquid bleach for a delicate wash in cold water. It is advisable to dry in the sun.

If you have to wash the curtain in an activator-type machine, then you should first soak it in warm water with laundry soap or bleach for 2 hours. Then wipe off the dirty areas with a brush and wash in warm water.

Experienced housewives advise instead of powder, in this case, to throw a few handfuls of soda into the car, and then rinse the product: first in a solution of vinegar (2 tablespoons per 1 litre of water), and then in clean water.

General recommendations for any type of wash:

  1. After washing, hold the curtain for half an hour in a salt solution, then let the water drain and immediately hang it in place. At the same time, a protective film is created on the surface of the curtain, which will protect it from rapid contamination.
  2. Do not wring out.
  3. Switch on the “delicate wash” mode with a temperature not higher than 40 o. Sometimes, the label can be a maximum allowable temperature of 30 on.
  4. Wash with regular powder and bleach.

By the way, before washing it is recommended to remove the rings from the curtains or wash in a special washing bag.

Handwash

Pre-soak the curtain in warm water and bleach. Add stain remover and soda to the wash water. Wipe especially dirty places with a brush using the following composition: a glass of soda for half a glass of warm water.

After that, you need to rinse, add 3 packs of citric acid to the rinse water. Then place the curtain in a solution of 5 tablespoons of salt per 1 litre of cold water. Take off and hang in half an hour.

Curtain Care

To protect the curtain in the bathroom from mould, mildew and other contaminants, you need once every two weeks (you can once a month):

  1. Clean it with any bathroom or kitchen product. To do this, the product should be diluted in half with water, poured into a spray bottle, sprayed on the curtain and wiped with a sponge. Then rinse off with clean water.
  2. Dissolve 100 g of soda in 0.5 l of hot water, spray and clean with a sponge.

These methods are fine if the curtain is not very dirty. With regular use of these methods, you can protect the curtain from stains and dirt.

How to remove mould from a bathroom curtain

Mould is caused by a fungal infection in a bathroom that does well in a humid environment. The fungus does not tolerate high temperatures, so it is advisable to use hot water when cleaning curtains:

  1. Take half a litre of milk and water, add 1 tbsp. l salt. Soak for 2 hours, then brush, rinse and dry.
  2. Squeeze the juice of 5 lemons, add hot water. Place a curtain in this solution. Wash after 20 minutes.

With very strong dirt and mould, you need to distribute a few drops of Domestos with your hands over the curtain (do not forget to wear gloves!), Which must first be moistened. Leave it for 20 minutes and wash.

The most durable curtains are vinyl. They can be sprayed with a strong saline solution and wiped with a rag after half an hour. Or soak overnight in warm water with two handfuls of washing powder, and wash in the morning.

Fabric curtains are very beautiful and easy to care for: they can be washed well in the washing machine. But in case of severe pollution, you can remove mould from the curtain in the bathroom by soaking it in Domestos (1 cap per litre of water), then brush it and wash it in the machine.

With very strong dirt, when neither vinegar nor ammonia helps, you can apply Whiteness to the curtain, and after a couple of minutes, wash it in the machine. The spots disappear completely.

How to wash curtains from yellowness and rust

Add a little bleach and a little stain remover to warm water, soak the product for several hours. If the curtain material is delicate, then soak in Vanish solution. Stronger, heavily soiled materials can be cleaned with Whiteness.

Very delicate curtains are cleaned of yellowness as follows:

  • mix 1 part of peroxide and 3 parts of ammonia;
  • moisten a sponge or brush in this solution and wipe the curtain;
  • rinse with clean cool water and a drop of fabric softener to neutralize the ammonia odour.

Be sure to wear gloves. If the curtain is heavily soiled, then soak it in a solution of citric acid and baking soda before washing. It is recommended to treat the curtain in this way to prevent yellowing.

How to remove limescale on your bathroom curtain

It is advisable to wipe the curtain with a dry cloth after each shower. But since this is unrealistic to implement in practice, the curtain is constantly covered with limescale due to contact with hard water.

To remove such plaque, the usual means are used:

  1. Lemon acid. It is added to water for washing or soaked with it overnight, and then brushed.
  2. Vinegar. Wipe off plaque with a brush with the following solution: 2 tbsp. l. vinegar in 1 litre of water.
  3. Vanish or ACE. Add to wash water.

Do not use a plumbing descaler to clean the blinds. This is only allowed for glass curtains.
