What Are the Different Types of Weight Loss That Exist Today?

Every year more than 44% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions to lose weight. Whether your reasons are health-related or aesthetic, chances are you’ve tried to lose weight once or twice. If you have, or if you’re looking to lose weight in the coming New Year, it can be overwhelming.

There’s so much weight loss information out there, how do you sift through it all? To make it a bit easier for you to start on your journey to optimal health, we put together this guide to the different types of weight loss. Read on to learn more!

Intermittent Fasting

Old school weight-loss protocol says it’s best to eat small meals throughout the day rather than three large meals. However, this has been debunked. Eating small snacks throughout the day doesn’t make you less hungry and it doesn’t promote weight loss any more than large meals that are spread out.

To capitalize on that fact, many people have taken up intermittent fasting. By keeping your meals within specific time frames, you can minimize how much you eat in a day.

Basic intermittent fasting is 8:16. This means you have 8 hours to eat and 16 hours to fast. Depending on your schedule, you might choose to eat from noon to 8pm.

More advanced fasting schedules can be 4:20, leaving you with 4 hours to eat. Others fast for 20 hours and eat for only one hour a day. However, it depends on your schedule and what you can comfortably tolerate.

Elimination Diets

Other diets focus on eliminating certain foods to restrict calories. For example, some people opt for a vegan or vegetarian diet in order to eliminate calories and fat from meat.

Others opt for a low-carb diet, which can reduce sugar and inflammation in the body. However, if you go for an elimination diet, it’s important to not overeat the other parts of your diet. For example, if you cut out all sweets, you can’t fill the void in your diet with bacon!

Medical Weight Loss

Medical weight loss is one of the best ways to focus on your health and wellbeing. In medical weight loss, a physician guides your weight loss process to make sure that you are getting adequate nutrition and enough exercise.

For the best weight loss results, any potential weight loss surgery should be paired with a healthy lifestyle. For that reason, in some cases, medical weight loss is a precursor for weight loss surgery. Certain medications can also be used to help promote weight loss.

Because it’s guided by a medical professional and focuses on building a healthy lifestyle, medical weight loss is one of the most effective and sustainable weight loss methods.
