Energy is needed by the human muscles to contract and relax for movement, such as walking or picking fats in your meals up an object. Energy is also needed to maintain body temperature, breathing rate and other vital functions. We obtain energy from the food we eat. Our body needs a constant supply of fuel in the form of calories and nutrients such as proteins, vitamins and minerals.

The macronutrients that provide us with these nutrients are carbohydrates,  fats  and protein . Carbohydrates  are our body’s main source of energy, and should provide 45 to 65 percent of the calories we get from food. Fats and protein each should provide about 10 to 35 percent of the energy we obtain from food.

Almost all foods contain a mixture of these three nutrients; however, in different proportions. For example, oils such as olive oil or canola oil are mostly fat. These contents are present in every food. However, they are never good for your health when taken in with processed contents.

Here are some harmful effects that excess of fats in your food cause to your body


This is the most common health problem, found in many countries. It happens because of low-activity level and an unhealthy lifestyle due to excessive intake of fats.

Being overweight significantly increases your risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and some types of cancer, such as breast cancer and colon cancer.

High cholesterol

The intestines absorb fats from the food that we eat. Our liver then converts these fats into cholesterol. If you have too much cholesterol in your system, it builds up on artery walls. Having high levels of cholesterol in your blood increases your risk of heart disease.

Saturated fat contributes to high levels of “bad” cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, LDL) in your blood.

Unhealthy liver  

Fats and oils in the food we eat is absorbed through our intestines and liver.


Having too much of fats in your system can increase the risk of stroke. It is mainly because of the presence of cholesterol and fatty deposits that clog our arteries. If these accumulate, they can block blood flow to your brain causing a stroke.

Studies and data analysis on international level shows that people who had consumed high carbohydrate diet are at greater risk of stroke, compared to those who had consumed medium carbohydrate diets.

Pregnancy issues  

There are some women who have had miscarriages because they have consumed too much unhealthy fatty food before pregnancy.

Excess of calories from fat impairs brain development of children when pregnant or lactating mothers consumes it.


Excessive intake of fats causes acne problems because they cause increased secretion of oil from glands in skin and hair follicles which in turn causes acne.

Heart disease

A leading cause of death in both men and women in the UK, heart disease is caused by the build-up of fatty deposits on the inside of the arteries. This restricts the flow of blood to the heart, increasing the risk of a heart attack.

Type 2 diabetes

this is a condition in which the body does not produce enough insulin or cannot use insulin properly. A healthy lifestyle with balanced diet is the only way to control this disease.

Consult a Doctor

If your doctor says that your high cholesterol is causing a problem and you need to reduce your fat intake, ask him or her which types of fats and oils are most heart healthy.

However, if you maintain the recommended amount, it will reduce your risk of developing health problems.
