The Philippine government has introduced the “work from home” bill, which will allow Filipinos to work in the comfort of their own homes, easing the heavy traffic and congestion in cities. To participate in the Telecommuting Act, employers and covered employees must enter into an agreement. However, the Act does not specify the industries that can benefit from this alternative work arrangement. It is left up to the DOLE to issue implementing rules.

However, employers must adhere to minimum labor standards when they offer telecommuting options, such as the right to rest days and overtime pay, and the right to social welfare and leave benefits. Additionally, telecommuting employees must be provided with reasonable access to the regular workplace, allowing them to interact with colleagues, and maintain confidentiality.

Telecommuting employees must designate a work area at home or an approved remote location for work. Depending on the nature of their work, telecommuting employees may need specialized equipment or a designated place to work. Each department will determine the exact requirements for designated work areas. Telecommuting employees must work in a safe and healthy environment. They are responsible for ensuring their work areas are equipped with appropriate equipment and meet the health and safety requirements of their workplace.
